Each year, the Detroit Kennel Club holds special clinics, contests and seminars just for exhibitors. Further information on the 2009 events will be posted once it becomes available.

Eye Clinic

There will be a "C.E.R.F." (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) Eye Clinic by a Board Certified Ophthalmologist from Michigan Veterinary Specialists at the Detroit Kennel Club Show. This tool for canine breeders is used to screen for heritable diseases in breeding dogs. Dog owners will receive immediate results which can be sent to the CERF registry. Exams will be available on Saturday, February 28 from 1PM to 4PM in the Detroit Hall Room D-2. Cost is $30 per dog. No advance registrations are necessary; dogs will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Dog owners must bring AKC registration papers for each dog. Dogs must be entered in the Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows. Further details and a registration form may be found on page 50 of the Premium List.

NEW RULES! MORE PRIZES! Bench Decoration Contest

To continue our strong tradition of breed education, the Detroit Kennel Club offers First through Fourth Place cash prizes for both individual exhibitor and breed club bench decorations that best exemplify the origin and purpose of a specific breed. The Detroit Kennel Club will offer a Rosette and $100 Cash for First Place, a Ribbon and $75 Cash for Runner-Up, a Ribbon and $50 Cash for Third Place and a Ribbon and $25 Cash for Fourth Place in both the Individual Exhibitor and Breed Club categories. Open to all exhibitors. Thumb tacks and tape only. Note: Fire Marshal requires flame retardant materials. Cobo Hall rules can be found on pages 12 & 13 in the Premium List.

Sportsmen's Dog Training Club of Detroit will hold Agility Trials on February 28 & March 1, 2009 in Oakland Hall, supported by the Detroit Kennel Club and Purina. NEW!! An Afternoon with the Professionals

The American Kennel Club Registered Handlers Program in conjunction with the Detroit Kennel Club presents for all current and future Junior Showmanship Participants "An Afternoon with the professionals to be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009. This seminar will be moderated by AKC Registered Handler Program Coordinators and assisted by AKC Registered Handlers.

JUNIOR HANDLERS ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR SPORT! All current Junior Showmanship Participants as well as future Juniors are invited to attend our free presentation. This is your opportunity to received individual instruction (with your dog) from current and/or former AKC Registered Professional Handlers to better enable you to present your dog in the show ring. Be There!

NEW!! Top Junior Handler Competition

To honor our TOP Junior Handlers, the Detroit Kennel Club will offer a limited competition for Juniors from the Open Class on Sunday, March 1, 2009. This is a separate competition from regular Junior Showmanship Classes which will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

To be eligible you must meet the following requirements:

1. Must Reside in: Ontario, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, West Virginia or Missouri.

2. Two (2) Open wins with competition. Wins must have occurred from February 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009. Wins at shows may include Specialty, Group & All-Breed Shows. (Wins at AKC Sanctioned Matches or Limited Junior Showmanship Classes do not qualify.)

3. Juniors must be under 18 years of age at the time of the qualifying wins.
Age on the day of this competition has no bearing.

The Junior chosen as the Top Junior Handler will be awarded an American Express Gift Card in the amount of $500.00 and an Embroidered Item offered by the Detroit Kennel Club Three (3) Awards of Merit will be awarded. The Juniors receiving the Awards of Merit will receive an American Express Gift Card in the amount of $100.00 and an Embroidered Item offered by the Detroit Kennel Club. The remaining four (4) Junior Handlers from the Top Eight (8) Juniors will receive an Embroidered Item offered by the Detroit Kennel Club.

Entries close at the same time as the Detroit Kennel Club Shows. Include the date and name of qualifying shows on your entry to their competition. An entry form is available in the Premium List.
