The Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows
Now in the ninetieth year, the Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows are one of only six "benched" shows left in the United States. The benched format welcomes show visitors, allowing access to over 150 breeds of American Kennel Club registered purebred dogs, their breeders, owners and handlers. When the dogs are not in the ring being judged, they are required to stay on six-inch risers (benches) and are grouped according to breed. Annually, thousands of visitors attend the two-day show.
Who attends these shows?
Dog lovers of all ages who make a visit to the dog shows a tradition
People searching for reputable breeders
Families out for a day of fun
Individuals who are researching what kind of dog is best for them
The shows are presented by the Detroit Kennel Club, a small group of individuals who have been active in the professional sport of purebred dogs for many years and are dedicated to educating the public about the sport of dogs, the role of the purebred dog in everyday life and the importance of getting dogs and puppies from reputable sources.
More than just a "dog show," the DKC offers visitors a day full of fun for the whole family. The 600,000 square foot Cobo Center is alive with canine demonstrations featuring search and rescue, obedience training demonstrations, field work and retrieving, duck herding demos, terrier racing, Leader Dogs for the Blind, canine first aid seminar, breeder lectures, American Kennel Club Rally Trials, flyball, pet therapy program and much, much more. The Detroit Kennel Club dog shows, long a Detroit tradition, have truly become an annual "Celebration of Dogs."
