Best Bred-By Exhibitor Competition
The Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show competition was instituted by the Detroit Kennel Club to showcase the all-important breeder. In addition, this prestigious competition also serves as a means for breeders to display the very best of their breeding programs. This contest has quickly grown to become a very competitive event, with outstanding representatives of almost all breeds vying for Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show. Please note that in 2010, Best Bred-By Exhibitor Competition will be held on Sunday, March 7.
Best Bred-By Exhibitor is awarded from the first place winners in the Bred-By Exhibitor classes immediately following each breed. If the Best of Winners or Best of Breed is awarded to a dog or bitch coming from the Bred-by Exhibitor class, then the Best Bred-By Exhibitor for that breed is automatic. If a Bred-By dog or bitch wins a regular group first prior to the Bred-By Exhibitor Group judging, they will automatically be awarded the first in the Bred-By Exhibitor Group. The Bred-By Exhibitor groups will be judged following the variety group that included that breed.
The Detroit Kennel Club reminds exhibitors, in keeping with the spirit of the Bred-By Exhibitor class, at the Sunday special event for Bred-By Exhibitors, in the breed, group and Best in Show competition, all dogs must be handled by the breeder and an owner of record, or one of the breeders of record and an owner of record. Family members must be breeder and owner of record to exhibit in the Bred-By Exhibitor class.
First through Fourth Place in each group will be awarded, with the group winner going on to Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show.

Best Puppy in Show Competition
The Detroit Kennel Club instituted the Best Puppy in Show competition to showcase the stars of tomorrow. As the American Kennel Club defines a puppy as under one year of age, only those entered in the 6 to 9 month and 9 to 12 month puppy classes are eligible. Please note that in 2010, Best Puppy in Show competition will be held on Saturday, March 6. The competition was moved to Saturday in order to make it a little easier on the young dogs.
This AKC approved event allows the puppy class winners in each breed to be judged immediately following Best of Breed to determine Best Puppy. An entry in the puppy class that is awarded Best of Winners or Best of Breed would automatically be Best Puppy. If a puppy wins a regular group first prior to the Puppy Group judging, they will automatically be awarded the first in the Puppy Group.
This is for all puppies entered in conformation in any of the seven groups. No additional fess are required. The puppy classes are 6 - 9 months and 9 - 12 months.
First through Fourth Place in each group will be awarded, with the group winner going on to Best Puppy in Show. Tentative judges for breed, groups and Best in Show can be found below.

Future shows
The Detroit Kennel Club Shows are an excellent venue for specialties and supported entries. The Cobo Convention Center is spacious, climate controlled, and is an extremely clean and safe environment for dogs. Loading and unloading is simple, as you can drive into the building Friday evening to unload, and drive in again after Best in Show on Sunday to load and depart. Grooming is next to your benching area, so there is no need to have a separate grooming area away from your dogs.
The Detroit Kennel Club is also the top AKC educational dog show in the country. As a benched show, the club makes a special effort to educate the public about American Kennel Club registered purebred dog ownership, and the importance of purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder. With almost 50,000 spectators over a two day period, the club offers a variety of educational and special events. Four or five breed seminars are presented each day; a "Guide to Buying a Purebred Puppy" is offered both days. In addition to having your specialty show in conjunction with the Detroit Kennel Club, we can offer seminars for judges and breeders, as well as separate seminars for the public to introduce them to and educate them on your breed. Beginning in 2005, the Detroit Kennel Club hopes to offer selected regional breed clubs additional space in which to set up breed education materials.
The Detroit Kennel Club is pleased to offer the following benefits for your specialty show:
$5 back per entry in those breeds which draw majors in either sex.
Complimentary function/show space.
Complimentary luncheon for both Sweeps and Breed judges, and up to four ring stewards per day.
Complimentary electric for grooming purposes.
Complimentary tables for trophy set up.
If you feel your breed club would be interested in holding a specialty or supporting an entry at the Detroit Kennel Club shows, the DKC would be delighted to have you. For questions concerning the 2010 shows, or future Detroit Kennel Club shows, please contact Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine.
